- Vickers made his Busch Series debut in 2001 at the age of 17, running four races that season in a car owned by his father.
- In 2002, Vickers drove 21 races in the Busch Series,Series, but it wasn’t until 2003, when he moved to Hendrick Motorsports,Motorsports, that his career took off.
- In 2003, he won three races and the Busch Series Championship, becoming the youngest driver ever to win a championship in one of NASCAR’s top three series. Later that year, he made his Cup Series debut, running five races in the #25 car.
- In 2004, he moved into the Cup Series full time, and finished second in the Rookie of the Year race, losing to Kasey Kahne
