Darlington Raceway is one of the most unusual tracks on the NASCAR circuit, because of its egg shape. This 1.366 mile track got its unusual design because the original landowner did not want to destroy a minnow pond on the property.
Known as “The Track Too Tough to Tame,” Darlington played host to the Southern 500 every Labor Day weekend for decades, but the Labor Day race was moved to California in 2003, and Darlington lost one of its two fall weekends -- both due to poor attendance -- though it still holds the Southern 500.
