2006: In mid 2006 Montoya announced that he was leaving Formula1 to come to NASCAR. He made his Cup Series debut in the final race of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway. However he suffered from a blown engine and ended up with a DNF.
2007: In 2007 Montoya won a Busch race in Mexico city after making an extra pitstop and driving back through the entire field only to spin out teammate Scott Pruett for the lead with seven laps to go. Later that season in the Cup series, Montoya played fuel mileage to win at the road course of Infineon. He missed the chase and finished 20th in the season standings.
2008: Montoya started the season by retaliating against Clint Bowyer for an incident in the Nationwide sereis the year before. Bowyer was spun from second position in the closing laps of the Daytona 500. Montoya then stuggled the remainder of the year, he had a seasons best second in the Spring Tallageda race and a top five at Watkins Glen as the only highlights untill the final four races of the year, where he had a top ten car in all races only to have it taken away by a wreck (Texas, Atlanta, Pheonix) or fuel mileage (Homestead-Miami).
