Kyle Petty
Born: June 2, 1960 in Randelman, N.C.
In the family: He was born into a racing dynasty. His father, Richard Petty, won 200 races and seven Winston Cup championships. His grandfather, Lee Petty, was a former NASCAR champion as well.
Career highlights: Kyle Petty has eight career victories, but has never been able to match the accomplishments of his father or grandfather on the track, finishing no higher than 5th in the Cup standings, which he did twice.
Trivia tidbit: What Kyle Petty is most known for is his charitable work. In 2000, his son, Adam Petty, a promising young driver, was killed during practice for a Busch Series race at New Hampshire International Speedway.
In Adam’s honor, Kyle and his wife, Patti – a former Miss Winston – started the Victory Junction Gang Camp, which provides medical care in a NASCAR-themed summer camp for terminally-ill children. The camp, which opened in 2004, has become a huge success, and has received huge support from the NASCAR community.
Petty also holds an annual charity motorcycle ride across the country to raise money for various charities.
