Career highlights: The diminutive Martin is a huge favorite with fans and drivers alike, who consider him a “racer’s racer.” Martin is often praised by his fellow drivers for his on-track etiquette, yielding to faster cars when necessary but always willing to race for position. Martin’s son, Matt, is a young racer who has shown much promise. Martin, an avid pilot, lives in a fly-in community in Florida that has its own runway.
Martin has 35 wins in his career and is NASCAR’s favorite bridesmaid, finishing second in the points standings on four separate occasions. He also has a record 47 victories in the Busch Series.
- Martin ran periodically in the Cup series from 1981-1988, but his career didn’t take off until he began his long partnership with owner Jack Roush in 1988.
- In 2005, in what was supposed to be his final year in the Cup series, Martin finished fourth in the points. But his retirement was delayed due to driver shuffling, and Martin agreed to stay on with Roush until the end of the 2006 season.
