Tall-a-dega!

What a great word, and what a great racetrack! This 2.66-mile oval is home to two of the best races, and arguably the best crowd, in all of NASCAR. Since 1969, this superspeedway has been a fixture on the Cup circuit, and a favorite among fans everywhere.

NASCAR requires that cars at Daytona and Talladega, the two superspeedways on the Nextel Cup circuit, use horsepower-sapping restrictor plates on their carburetors in an effort to contain speeds. The restrictor plates cause the cars to bunch together in packs and draft off each other, which leads to exciting racing and often results in “the big one,” a large crash that can take out dozens of cars.

Located 40 miles east of Birmingham, Alabama, and 95 miles west of Atlanta, there’s plenty to do in the surrounding area -- from the Talladega-Texaco Walk of Fame inside Davey Allison Memorial Park to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, located just next to the Talladega Superspeedway. Other sights in the surrounding area include:

Be sure to see Cheaha State Park, which contains the highest point in Alabama. It offers hiking, swimming and fishing, among other activities.
