What bothers me about NASCAR
Dec 3 2011, 1:48 AM EST
So, I've been a big NASCAR fan since I was a young boy (I'm 23 now), and I appreciate many of the changes that have occurred over the years, but there's some things that worry me. I understand that the corporate guys want to make the sport as marketable to as broad a base as possible, but why do they try to institute concepts from other sports, which are kind of shoe-horned into auto racing. Im talking about things like a playoff, "overtime", fantasy racing leagues, 'wild cards', all-star races,. and whatever else anyone can think of. Im not trying to bad mouth any of these changes, it just seems like they're looking at what makes OTHER sports exciting, and not what makes racing cool and exciting. This isn't football or basketball, and it has a lot of unique features that they should try thinking outside the box about. I would just hate for potential fans to be turned off because they see the sport as just trying to copycat on success. Does anyone else feel this way, or am I already becoming an old fogey?

David, you hit the nail on the head. And when Brian France went with the "Fast & Furious" wings and splitters I just knew it was going to be a confussion factor. If I want drifting I can tune it in. If I want Incy Cars, I can tune it in. Nascar being everything to everybody has not worked well and now that they are going back to their root identity with different cars in Nationwide and Cup I see them growing in the future. The fans Brian was after came, they saw, then they left as the latest Hot Trend came along.
